A weight loss diet is one that ensures you burn more calories than you consume. You will determine the total amount of calories you can consume on a daily basis. This calculation will consider factors such as exercise and the amount of calories you need to intake to maintain your current weight. Of course through experience, you will make adjustments and refinements along the way until you learn what is ideal for you.

There are several popular weight loss diets. There are diets that focus on keeping fat or calories low. While other diets restrict the amount of carbohydrates you consume. Also, you can have various combinations of these diets such as the low carbohydrate, high protein ones.

No matter which diet you select, it can produce greater results when combined with exercise; specifically, coupling your diet with flexibility, strength, and cardio workouts. For the rest of this article we will discuss the basics for a few popular weight loss diets.

Low Fat

During the latter part of the 20th century, health studies showed a significant correlation between fat, cholesterol, and heart disease. Since then, the medical community has realized that not all fat increases the risk of heart disease. Some fat contains essential elements such as fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Still, the common misconception that all fat is bad remains. This accounts for the present popularity of low fat diets. Even if science has already proven the importance of fat in your diet, many still believe otherwise. If you select this weight loss diet, keep in mind that body fat is different than dietary fat. Although, you may restrict your dietary fat, you could still gain weight if you consume too many calories from protein and carbohydrate foods and/or beverages.

Low Carbohydrate

The success of a certain low carbohydrate diet among celebrities has also increased public interest in these plans. It has been proven effective and with the proof comes confidence in the ability of the diet to live up to its promises. A low carbohydrate weight loss diet is one that promotes fat loss. The goal is to lower your body fat percentage and to tone up. Typically, a low carbohydrate diet is coupled with a high protein one. Likewise, you could experience synergic fat loss effects from building more lean muscle.

Low Calorie

Low calorie diets are made for one specific purpose in mind and that is weight loss. The goal is to tremendously reduce your calories to a point (that is still healthy) where you are guaranteed to expend more calories than you consume. Although this diet is effective, it could be very hard to sustain over a long period of time. Thus, it is best to seek advice from your doctor or nutritionist before starting. This also applies to any other weight loss diet.

In summary, dieting consists of altering the food you consume to achieve or sustain a desired weight. In several cases, it is used in conjunction with regular exercise to maximize weight-related benefits. Not all diets are the same and results may vary. Likewise, the best weight loss diet for you may be different from others.
